“Doctors keep their scalpels and other instruments handy, for emergencies. Keep your philosophy ready too.”

-Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor (161-180 AD)

What I Do

Speech comes with responsibility. Whether I tell stories in my voice, your voice, or your brand’s, I will do so with integrity and empathy.

However, as Aurelius advises, we all need a philosophy ready for situations that test our values. Here is mine:

Code of Ethics

  1. Support ideas that seek truth and serve humanity.

  2. Be candid when my viewpoint contradicts a client’s.

  3. Respect readers as thoughtful, autonomous individuals. Value their attention as I would my own.

  4. Do not make BS “content,” and do not reduce human beings to “consumers.”

  5. When borrowing ideas and facts, give credit to whomever it’s due.

  6. Vet every source, especially the ones I want to believe.

  7. Be comfortable with nuance, complexity, and uncertainty.

  8. Be a critical, independent thinker.

  9. Raise the questions that are hardest to ask.

  10. Treat every conversation with a client as privileged and confidential.
